Bowyer fue el más veloz en la práctica recortada en Talladega
La sesión en Talladega se vio recortada por la lluvia. El mexicano Daniel Suárez fue décimo.

Desafortunadamente, el primer paquete completó apenas una docena de vueltas antes de que los cielos volvieran a abrirse en la pista de 2.66 millas.
Clint Bowyer registró la velocidad máxima (196.822 mph) en los primeros 10 minutos con un tiempo de vuelta de 48.653 segundos, seguido por Kevin Harvick, Brad Keselowski, Kurt Busch y Joey Logano. Trevor Bayne, Ryan Blaney, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Aric Almirola y Daniel Suárez completando el top 10.
"Tengo un buen poco de confianza de todo el grupo - desde Tony Gibson todo el camino hacia abajo", dijo el ganador de la Daytona 500 Kurt Busch. "Stewart-Haas construye grandes vehículos con el uso de la placa de restrictor".
NASCAR marcó la pista con bandera roja 13 minutos por la lluvia, finalizando la sesión prematuramente. NASCAR también anunció que el No. 13 (Ty Dillon), el No. 42 (Kyle Larson) y el No. 83 (Corey LaJoie) habían cumplido sus penalizaciones por llegar tarde a la inspección previa a la carrera en Richmond.
Danica Patrick, cuyo coche falló antes de la inspección de la carrera en el LIS en Richmond, también fue puesto en libertad para la práctica.
