Sato gana la pole en Alabama y O'Ward desde atrás
Takuma Sato se llevó la posición de privilegio para la tercera carrera de la temporada en una sesión inusual. El mexicano Patricio O'Ward no avanzó de la primera ronda.

El japonés Takuma Sato logró la pole position para la carrera en Alabama al cronometrar 1m08.5934s, superando por 0.1037s a Graham Rahal, bloqueando así la primera línea para el equipo de Bobby Rahal.
Scott Dixon, James Hinchcliffe, Sébastien Bourdais y Spencer Pigot completaron los seis primeros de la sesión.
El piloto mexicano Patricio O’Ward largará desde la posición 18 luego de quedar eliminado en la primera ronda del grupo 2. El integrante del equipo Carlin cronometró una mejor vuelta de 1m08.9011s, lo que fue una diferencia de 0.4015 respecto a Scott Dixon, el más veloz del sector.
O’Ward llegó a estar dentro de la zona de corte, incluso en el tercer lugar, pero un rápido avance en la última tanda de Ryan Hunter-Reay, Takuma Sato y James Hinchcliffe lo dejaron fuera de los seis más rápidos.
El mexicano declaró a IndyCar Radio que el problema de su calificación radicó en el entendimiento de los neumáticos rojos.
