Penske 1-2 en la penúltima práctica
Simon Pagenaud y Josef Newgarden lideraron la práctica del lunes en Indianápolis.

Pagenaud y Newgarden lograron romper la barrera de 228 mph, Pagenaud logró su velocidad de 228.441 mph con su 88º y último giro de la sesión.
Sin embargo, Takuma Sato, integrante de Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing-Honda, se mostró contento por todos los sectores del óvalo.
Otro piloto que parecía capaz de correr en cualquier parte de la pista y mantenerse cerca con el auto al frente durante los giros fue el ganador de Andretti Autosport-Honda 2016, Alexander Rossi, quien terminó la sesión en quinto lugar.
Entre los Penske se encontraba James Hinchcliffe y Scott Dixon de Chip Ganassi Racing.
Helio Castroneves, tres veces ganador de Indy 500, fue séptimo, un poco más lento que el único Carlin clasificador, el de Charlie Kimball, y un poco más rápido que Will Power.
La razón de que aparezcan 34 velocidades en la tabla de posición es porque Tony Kanaan probó el auto de Matheus Leist así como el suyo.
