Pagenaud lidera un triple de Penske para la carrera 1 de Detroit
Simon Pagenaud se puso por delante de Helio Castroneves y Juan Pablo Montoya.

El líder del campeonato recorrió el circuito en un tiempo de 1m14.9166s para dejar una diferencia de 0.0119 segundos sobre el colombiano y de 0.6 segundos sobre el tercero.
Lo que sorprendió fue el noveno sitio del australiano Will Power, quien a su vez dominó la práctica de la mañana. El australiano no logró avanzar más allá de la Q2 luego de que desde la Q1 presentó problemas.
James Hinchcliffe empezará cuarto con el Schmidt Peterson Motorsport-Honda, seguido por Carlos Munoz y el campeón reinante Scott Dixon en la sexta posición. Tony Kanaan y Charlie Kimball le siguieron.
Graham Rahal arrancará décimo seguido por Takuma Satoy Mikhail Aleshin.
