Vettel y Ferrari vuelven al lugar donde una caótica salida rompió su sueño

Sebastian Vettel llega al GP de Singapur de este fin de semana en la misma forma en la que dejó la edición de 2017, bajo agua.

Hace dos años, Ferrari y Vettel optaban a un título que empezaron a perder después de un accidente en la salida con Max Verstappen y su propio compañero, Kimi Raikkonen. Ahora, el alemán llega a Singapur después de dos victorias consecutivas de su actual vecino de box, Charles Leclerc, y ha recibido duras críticas después de su trompo en Monza y su reincorporación, durante la cual se tocó con Lance Stroll.

Pero echemos un vistazo a la edición de 2017 y recordemos cómo se desarrolló...

El escenario

Vettel logró la pole position, y su rival por el título Lewis Hamilton, que llevaba varias victorias consecutivas, solo pudo ser quinto el sábado. Vettel había perdido la primera plaza en el mundial en la anterior carrera en Monza, y estaba ansioso por recuperar la ventaja.

Verstappen se clasificó segundo con el Red Bull, por delante de su compañero de equipo Daniel Ricciardo y del compañero de Vettel en Ferrari, Raikkonen.

Además:

Una lluvia torrencial antes del inicio añadió más tensión al drama, y la carrera empezó desde parado en lugar de tras el coche de seguridad. Cuando se apagaron las luces, Raikkonen fue el piloto que mejor salió, y se echó hacia la izquierda de Verstappen.

Sin embargo, justo cuando estaba a punto de iniciar el adelantamiento, su rueda trasera derecha golpeó la delantera izquierda de Verstappen. Vettel se había también desviado a la izquierda, dejando al Red Bull metido entre los Ferrari, y tras el toque entre Max y Kimi, el finlandés salió disparado arrollando a Vettel.

Y aunque llegó líder a la primera curva, Vettel acabaría trompeando poco después por los daños de su monoplaza.

Los tres tuvieron que abandonar, dejando a Hamilton una alfombra roja a un triunfo inesperado que le hizo aumentar su liderato nada menos que 25 puntos, abriendo una brecha insalvable.

En una encuesta de casi 2.000 lectores de James Allen, el 76% culpó a Vettel por provocar el accidente, y el 17% lo calificó como un incidente de carrera. Raikkonen fue considerado el menos responsable con un 2%, y un 5% creía que Verstappen tenía la culpa.

¿Qué dijeron los protagonistas?

Vettel: “Todos intentamos avanzar y salió mal para los tres. Es parte de las carreras. Estas cosas pasan, no hay mucho que puedas hacer, por lo tanto, no tiene mucho sentido intentar mirarlas una y otra vez".

"Cada salida es diferente y la manera en la que se desarrolló puede verse una y otra vez, pero ya no se puede cambiar. Fue bastante desafortunado para los tres, así que tenemos que seguir adelante".

Verstappen dejó claro quién era el culpable: "Creo que principalmente Sebastian. Empezó a cerrarme y tal vez no vio a Kimi en la izquierda. Eso no es una excusa; si estás luchando por el Mundial, no debes tomar esos riesgos al cerrar tanto a otro piloto. No fue muy inteligente. Puedes ver lo que ha pasado: Lewis lidera y nosotros estamos fuera".

"Traté de evitarlo porque podía verlo venir, pero los neumáticos traseros son más anchos que los delanteros, así que ya no podía escaparme".

"Estaba en el medio de los dos sin hacer nada malo, solo estaba tratando de tener una salida limpia".

Raikkonen, a su estilo: "No sé. Hay siempre diferentes puntos de vista según quién lo mire, pero no creo que yo pudiera haber hecho algo diferente. Hice una buena salida, pero luego tuve un toque y nuestra carrera acabó. Es una pena".

Los comisarios de la F1 no tomaron medidas después de una investigación posterior a la carrera. Pero en cuanto al mundial 2017, fue un duro golpe para Vettel y Ferrari.
